The 1804 Draped Bust Silver Dollar is one of the most famous and enigmatic coins in American history — often hailed as the “King of American Coins.”
Although dated 1804, no silver dollars were actually struck for circulation that year. The coins known today as 1804 dollars were in fact minted decades later, around the 1830s, as special presentation pieces for diplomatic proof sets ordered by the U.S. State Department. Only 15 examples are known to exist, divided into three distinct classes, each with its own fascinating story and provenance.
The coin’s obverse features a graceful portrait of Liberty facing right, surrounded by thirteen stars and the date 1804 below. The reverse shows the heraldic eagle with a shield, olive branch, and arrows — symbols of peace and strength — along with the national motto E Pluribus Unum.

The obverse features a detailed reproduction of the classic Liberty portrait surrounded by 13 stars, with the date 1804 below. Around the rim, it bears the inscriptions “Niue Island,” “Five Dollars,” “2025,” “2 oz,” and “Ag 999,” indicating its issuer, face value, year, weight, and silver purity.
The reverse showcases the iconic heraldic eagle design with a shield, arrows, and olive branch, along with the motto “E Pluribus Unum” above. The outer ring reads “Greatest United States Coins” with a small U.S. flag at the bottom, celebrating this piece as a symbol of American numismatic history.
